Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Animals

Posted on July 7, 2025 by Hypervets

Enhanced Oxygen Delivery

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in plasma, allowing oxygen to reach tissues even with compromised or restricted blood flow. This supports healing in ischemic or poorly perfused areas.

Accelerated Wound Healing

HBOT promotes tissue regeneration by stimulating fibroblast activity, collagen synthesis, and capillary formation (angiogenesis), speeding recovery from wounds, burns, and surgical incisions.

Reduction of Inflammation and Swelling

Oxygen under pressure causes vasoconstriction, which helps reduce edema (swelling) while still delivering high levels of oxygen to tissues, aiding recovery from trauma or surgery.

Enhanced Infection Control

High oxygen levels boost white blood cell activity and enhance the killing of bacteria, especially anaerobic pathogens. It also improves antibiotic effectiveness and helps disrupt bacterial biofilms.

Pain Reduction

By decreasing inflammation and swelling, HBOT can relieve pain associated with injury, infection, or chronic inflammatory conditions.

Improved Healing of Bone and Soft Tissue Infections

Conditions like osteomyelitis (bone infections) and deep soft tissue infections benefit from HBOT due to increased oxygenation and immune function in hard-to-reach areas.

Support for Neurological Recovery

HBOT can aid recovery in animals with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, or intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) by reducing inflammation and promoting neural repair.

Adjunct to Cancer Therapy

In certain cases, HBOT is used to support healing after radiation therapy (e.g., for tumors), minimizing tissue damage and improving surgical outcomes

Management of Delayed Healing and Chronic Conditions

Non-healing wounds, abscesses, and other chronic inflammatory conditions may respond positively to HBOT when conventional treatments are insufficient.
